Why Long Term Survival

Most people don't seem to be able to comprehend is the term long term-survival. The short answer is: long-term survival is when you find yourself in a situation where you are going to have to survive for an indefinite period of time, or perhaps even forever, with no modern conveniences or help from anyone other than the people that may happen to be with you. This would be due, most likely, to a national catastrophic event, either manmade or natural. This will be an event that destroys the power grid there by destroying the infrastructure of the U.S. This will be a situation where there is no electricity, fuel, supermarkets, hospitals, public water, communication, transportation or any authority of any kind. In other words, this will be a situation where you and your Group will be on your own. You find yourself thrust back in time a hundred maybe two hundred years.

The difficulty most people have in trying to understand the concept of long-term survival is the fact that it is in fact a long-term situation. Most people and most Survival or Prepper websites and books seem to believe no matter the event that occurs all you will have to do is manage to survive a couple weeks and everything will be back as it was. People can't or maybe they just refuse to accept the permanence of such an event.

When an event occurs that destroys the power grid and therefore the infrastructure there will be no getting back to normal. In a couple weeks following an event you won't be able to run down to a Kroger's and stock up on groceries. You won't be able to drive down to your local sporting goods store and replenish your stock of ammunition. You won't be able to run down to Walmart and get new batteries, you won't be able to run down to your doctor's office and have that infected cut cleaned and dressed. You won't be able to get on your smart phone or the computer and check on relatives. Not at all, once you use all of your ammunition that rifle suddenly becomes a club, that flashlight suddenly becomes a useless piece of junk, you had better have first aid supplies to take care of that cut and you had better have the ability to forage for food. As for checking on relatives, chances are you will never hear from or see them again.

Surviving long term will require a completely different set of skills than surviving a short-term emergency. In order to survive long term, you have to prepare, you have to think long term.

You can survive short term by rubbing to stick together to make a fire, sleeping under a lean too, eating bugs and boiling water to drink. These skills will not allow you to survive long term. To survive long term, especially if you have family, young and old Folks, you must prepare. Surviving long term requires a long-term food supply or more importantly the ability to acquire that food. Long term survival will require you preserving food; it will require you building a permanent shelter. You will require a source of clean fresh water, you will have to provide any medical care required. Long term survival will require you making your clothing, as well as your shoes. These are only a few of the skills you will require to survive long term; there are any number of other skills needed.

The inevitable results of a national catastrophic event will be anarchy. When a national catastrophic event does occur, there will be a complete breakdown of society. Without electricity, without policing authority, without public water supply, without a super market, without the modern conveniences we are now accustomed to, then yes, there is no doubt society will crumble. The inevitable result is anarchy. This has been made evident by the recent hurricanes where just a few days after the storm hit looting reached epidemic levels. The only way you and your family will survive anarchy will be to get Out of Harm's Way.

You may think I am exaggerating. Actually, I am probably understating the facts. Just take a few minutes and think about it. What if the power grid were destroyed, makes little difference how, what would you have? The longer the power grid were to remain down the less chance of it ever coming back on line. The fact is if the U.S. were to lose the power grid it is a very high probability it would never come back up. The domino effect it would cause would quickly, within three or four days, destroy the U.S. infrastructure. What if it never comes back on...you would have nothing. If the national power grid goes down life as we know it would change instantly. Everything we have is dependent on electricity...everything. Light, communication, heat, running water, hospital, law enforcement, food, transportation, and in many cases life itself

In 1981 the American Medical Association made the following announcement: "It is in the spirit of concern that the AMA Board of Trustees believes it is incumbent upon the Associations to inform the President and Congress of the medical consequences of nuclear war and that no medical response will be possible."

This statement was followed by the American College of Physicians in a paper stating: The American College of Physicians believes that there can be no adequate preparedness for the devastating consequences of nuclear war.

Although both the AMA and the ACP were writing about nuclear war, I believe the same would apply to any Catastrophic Event. As Wayne D. LeBaron stated in his book The Reluctant Survivors:

"In almost all planning and disaster scenarios the assumption is made that physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals who are not killed or injured would go forth immediately and begin caring for the wounded. This implies that they will be immune to psychological shock that other survivors would be suffering. They would valiantly set forth despite high radiation levels, forgetting their concern for family and friends and work totally without regard for self. Isn't it more logical to believe that they, being human like the rest, would seek shelter and family?"

   U.S. Army Survival Manual:

Survival planning is nothing more than realizing that something could happen that would put you in a survival situation and, with that realization, taking steps to increase your chances of survival. In other words, survival planning is being prepared."

In the event the U.S. should suffer a national catastrophic event the only way you will be able to protect and provide for you family will be to get them out of harms way. In order to do this, you must prepare. You must have a well-supplied evacuation point located in a remote area. With Out Of Harm's Way and the Preparing To Survive website our goal is to provide information that will allow you to do just that...get Out Of Harm's Way
